Overview
The PKU-IHEID 3+2 Program aims to select fourth-year undergraduate students from the School of International Studies at Peking University to pursue further studies at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID). Upon successful completion of their studies and fulfillment of the requirements, students will be awarded both a Bachelor’s degree from Peking University (awarded after the first academic year in Switzerland) and a Master’s degree from IHEID (awarded after the second academic year in Switzerland). Students admitted to this program will study at Peking University until the end of their third year and must complete all required course credits. After passing the qualification review, they will proceed to IHEID in Switzerland for a two-year study period.
Entry Requirements
The program maintains an annual intake quota of no more than five students. For the 2024 cohort, eligibility is extended to current undergraduates from two specific enrollment years: students admitted in 2022 (excluding those who transferred laterally into the program in 2023) are scheduled for dispatch to Geneva in September 2025, while students admitted in 2023 (excluding 2024 lateral transfers) will be scheduled for September 2026 dispatch. This structured timeline ensures orderly academic progression while accounting for students’ undergraduate completion requirements at Peking University before commencing their graduate studies at IHEID. The exclusion of lateral transfer students preserves program continuity and maintains consistent academic preparation standards among participants.
Program Content
This program selects outstanding fourth-year undergraduates from PKU’s School of International Studies to study at IHEID. Upon completion, students will receive a Bachelor’s degree from Peking University and a Master’s degree from IHEID.
Students admitted to the program must complete their third undergraduate year at Peking University before undergoing a final qualification review. Those who fail compulsory courses, lack sufficient credits, do not meet foreign language proficiency requirements, have disciplinary records, or are medically unfit to continue studies will automatically forfeit their eligibility for the Swiss program. Only students passing this review may proceed to study in Switzerland.
Participants must fulfill all undergraduate course credit requirements within their first three years at Peking University while adhering to the following restrictions: they may not participate in other international exchange programs, PKU dual-degree programs, or the university’s postgraduate recommendation exemption system. They are expected to complete their undergraduate thesis and obtain their PKU graduation certificate and bachelor’s degree during their fourth year.
According to IHEID regulations, the study period in Switzerland typically spans two years. Upon completing their first year in Switzerland, students who have successfully defended their PKU undergraduate thesis and met all degree requirements will be awarded a bachelor’s degree from Peking University. Students must complete all undergraduate graduation procedures in accordance with PKU regulations. Those who fail their undergraduate thesis defense will not graduate from PKU, will be ineligible for study period extensions, and will consequently lose their qualification to continue master’s studies at IHEID.
Students who graduate from PKU and successfully complete IHEID’s first-year requirements may advance to the second year of study. Those who meet PKU’s graduation requirements but fail to satisfy IHEID’s standards will still receive their PKU bachelor’s degree (though PKU assumes no responsibility for any resulting challenges in postgraduate admissions, award applications, or employment opportunities).
Participants must return to PKU by June 10 following their first academic year at IHEID to complete re-enrollment and graduation procedures. Failure to do so will result in the inability to obtain their PKU bachelor’s degree.
Upon successful completion of all second-year requirements at IHEID, students will be awarded a master’s degree from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
