UN Under-Secretary-General and Rector of the United Nations University Professor Tshilidzi Marwala Delivers a Lecture

On the afternoon of February 25, 2025, Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, UN Under-Secretary-General and Rector of the United Nations University, visited Peking University and delivered a lecture at the School of International Studies (SIS). The event was hosted by Professor Zhang Haibin, Vice Dean of SIS and Chair of the Department of International Organizations and Global Public Policy. Attendees included Professor Sun Hua, Director of the Center for Faculty Development at Peking University; Professor Pang Xun from SIS; and Ms. Ma Lan and Ms. Cheng Sisi from the Office of International Relations of Peking University. Nearly 60 Chinese and international students from various departments of the university attended the lecture.

Professor Zhang Haibin opened the event by introducing Professor Marwala’s professional background and academic work, and extended a warm welcome on behalf of SIS. Professor Marwala expressed his appreciation for the hospitality and delivered a lecture titled “Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development: The Future Ahead.”

In his lecture, Professor Marwala first introduced the history and founding mission of the United Nations University, highlighting its role as the UN’s think tank, research network, and immersive academic institution. He then shared his insights on the fundamental functions of artificial intelligence, its applications and limitations in sustainable development, and the potential risks. He emphasized AI’s potential to significantly accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals while underscoring the urgent need for robust global AI governance.

Professor Marwala’s lecture was highly engaging, with clear structure, broad vision, and accessible analysis. It was well received by faculty and students alike.

During the discussion session, students actively posed questions. Professor Marwala praised the depth of their thinking and responded thoughtfully, drawing on his own professional and academic experience. The atmosphere was lively and interactive.

At the conclusion of the event, Professor Zhang Haibin presented a commemorative gift to Professor Marwala on behalf of the School, marking a successful close to the lecture.
