At the core of this program at Peking University and LSE lies the possibility to view International Affairs and International History from different perspectives. Being part of a cohort of students from all over the world, participating in the courses of this degree allowed us to critically reflect on different views and narratives on how spaces are constructed in the world we find ourselves. By engaging deeply with IR and History at the two world class institutions, this program has set me up well for a career both in academia and policy.
At Peking University, classes like US-China relations, taught together with Stanford University, or Sino-African relations, gave a realistic image of the state of international diplomacy. Participating in a broad range of courses and extracurricular activities such as rowing and language exchanges, I got to know many international friends and built my understanding of China’s role in the world. In Beijing, I also had the opportunity to intern at an international publishing house. Outside of university, I attended many events, for example the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at the Embassy of Ireland. Overall, the time at Peking University gave me a valuable impression of China’s view and position in the world.

While I could write an Ode to the wonderful time I had at Peking University, I think it is probably also interesting for you to hear about the time in London!
At LSE, in the heart of London, the program focuses on International History. The compulsory course, 20th century crisis and decision-making, offered close readings of crises and how diplomats and officials made decisions at the time. There was also the possibility to attend courses on IR, so I took a course on European Security Policy, for example. Outside of university, I particularly enjoyed wandering around the different museums in London, being part of LSE rowing, and attending the wide array of open lectures and talks at various universities in London. Here, a picture of LSE rowing on the Thames.

Since the journey to other places in the UK is not so far, I visited a friend at Oxford University and got to see the inspiring and stunning views of the different colleges there. Here is a small impression of my trip to Oxford.

Exploring the Christmas markets and beautiful lights around London in winter was one of the biggest joys of being in London. LSE also had its own Christmas tree at the center of its campus!

In my view, this degree is an excellent opportunity to build a strong foundation for entering the world of policy or academia. Being in this program I was able to draw from a range of perspectives, conduct research for a thesis at both Peking University and LSE, and build friendships with incredible people. The years at Peking University and LSE offer an intellectually stimulating environment with the space for an open and critical debate on the historical and current situatedness of international affairs. Living in both Beijing and London at these two amazing institutions is something I am very grateful for.
