MIR Program Prospectus for 2014 Entry

About the Program
The School of International Studies at Peking University (hereinafter referred to as SIS) is inviting application for the Master’s Degree Program in International Relations (MIR). All eligible applicants with a strong interest in international relations in general and Chinese foreign relations in particular are warmly welcomed to apply.
As the most internationalized school at Peking, SIS aims to train students through both empirical and theoretical approaches. The MIR program requires two years of graduate study at Peking. Students will receive intensive and rigorous training in various fields ranging from general politics, foreign affairs, to social development of contemporary China. Although students are encouraged to study Mandarin in this program, all MIR courses and theses are conducted in English. Students will be granted a master’s degree in International Relations by Peking University once all requirements are fulfilled.

Qualifications
1. Eligibility. This program is designed only for international applicants and applicants from the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan areas of China. Foreign applicants should hold valid passports issued by their countries, while applicants from the Chinese areas of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan must be permanent inhabitants.
2. Prior Degree. Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an institution of recognized standing.
3. Language Proficiency. Applicants from non-English speaking background or who did not receive their bachelor’s degree from an English speaking university are required to provide valid English test certificates - IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 107(ibt).
4. Other Requirements. Applicants should be no more than 40 years old by the time of application.

Applicants from overseas please visit http://www.studyatpku.com/shop/member!index.action?request_locale=en_US to complete the application form. Applicants from Chinese areas of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan please visit http://hmt.studyatpku.com/shop/member!index.action. Please print out a copy for your reference and attach photo as required.
2. A personal statement of no more than 1000 words and a CV/resume
3. Graduation certificate and degree diploma, must be original or certified copies either in Chinese or English (Students in the last year of their bachelor’s program should provide an official letter stating their expected graduation date)
4. Official transcripts, original or certified copies either in Chinese or English
5. Two reference letters
6. English language proficiency certificate, IELTS 7.0, or TOEFL 107 (ibt)
7. If applicable: abstracts of publications and/or any original work in other forms in relevant fields
8. One personal passport size photo and one digital photo
9. One photocopy of all the application documents
Submitted materials will not be returned.

Applicants should send the documents to International Programs Officer Ms. Cui Ling by mail and email via the contact information below. An unrefundable application fee of RMB 400 Yuan is charged online with application form. No application will be processed without the application fee.
Timetable
Applications open: October 1, 2013
Applications close: March 31, 2014 (All the application documents must submit before this date)
Admission decisions announced: the end of May, 2014 (via email)
The offers sent out: July, 2014 (by both regular mail and email)
Program starts: Early September 2014 the exact date will be noted in the Admission Confirmation letter
Tuition Fee
RMB 75,000 Yuan per annum
Degree
Certified by the Degree Committee of Peking University, a Master’s Degree in International Relations will be granted upon completion of required credits, a Master’s thesis and an oral defense.
